Essential SEO Tips Before Starting A Site:

1) Set Yourself A Keyword That Hasn't Got Much Competition. Use this free keyword tool to discover how much advertiser competition you have and how many searches are made each month: Google Adwords Keyword Checker - The perfect result would be very low competition and a very high search volume.

2) Use Your Keyword!!! Make sure that you include your keyword in your site title, h1, h2 & h3 tags. Include your keyword over your pages a few times (Approx 2-5% of your page content). Also make your keywords on your pages bold. E.g. Truthometer

3) Don't Have Too Many Outbound Links - It isn't a very good idea for your website to have too many outbound links before it has started, especially try to avoid affiliate marketing network links and websites that have a PR0. You can check a site's PR (Page Rank) here: PRCheck

Essential SEO Tips Once Your Site Is Live

1) Get Some Backlinks - Get your website some backlinks from other websites. It will help a lot more if you get one backlink from a PR1 website compared to 1000 baclinks from PR0 so remember to use this Page Rank Checker. Try not to go over the top when your site first starts out as Google will penalize you for spamming and your site will not be on a search engine to optimize!!! This is the most effective method of getting a better PR (Page Rank).

Sidenote: It may be worth paying for Google Adwords (PPC) for a little while when your site first starts out as this will get your URL onto some top PR1 domains that use Google Adsense (EPC) that get spidered more often so this will help out your search engine position while you are building backlinks.
